Artist Wayin
This website is dedicated to the works of Carl Eugene Matson who was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on January 21, 1913. During his lifetime Carl remained an outsider artist who supported himself working non-skilled jobs. This prolific reader and self-taught artist evolved creatively as an abstract artist. Matson’s works include contemporary color collages made with construction paper cut with surgical precision using a butterfly-style razor blade. The artist referred to these collages as his “paper dolls” and titled his collection, “My Book of Hours”, or simply “My Book.” Matson's art was largely autobiographical and told the story of his life, which was inspired by the Book of Hours from the Medieval Ages. This artist died in 1974 at the age of 61.
